Uplift: Central Utah
"By the time we reached Wild Horse, the sky wore that old Western shade of blue, big and heavy, painted with strokes of white cloud. Rusty sandstone towers reached upward from a sea of slickrock, sage, piñon, and juniper. I pulled over at the mouth of the canyon to air down the tires and tighten the suspension, readying the truck for rock ledges and dry riverbeds to come."

Beyond the Beaten Path: Iceland Highlands
"Sleepless as usual, I slithered out of the red porthole and climbed up the hill behind camp. Higher ground provided a better vantage point of our route to Langisjór, mostly hidden the night before in the dark. It was just light enough to make out the shape of the glacial lakes below, their glassy surfaces mirroring the soft gray sky."

Currents: Baja Sur
"The storm was closing in fast, and the wind had intensified with the rising tide. At one point, a gust picked up my notepad and sent it skittering down the beach. Seagulls squawked and scattered, and shore crabs sought higher ground. Our planned trip up the coast was looking less likely by the second, so I snapped a couple more photos and turned us back south toward the condo."

Passage: South Coast, Iceland
"We opted to leave the car on the mainland, as the limited daylight would make a fast-and-light approach on foot the most efficient way to explore. Christian and I selected a small bag each and quickly repacked the necessities into our Eagle Creek kit: cameras, drone, a modest lunch, and a few extra layers in case the weather turned for the worse."
